MUSSOORIE: One of the most visited hill stations near Delhi

Mussoorie for long has been perceived as a perfect weekend destination by most North Indians. No wonder the “Queen of Hills” is thronged by couples, families and backpackers alike on extended weekends. Nearly 38km from Dehradun, Mussoorie offers a wonderful view of the Himalayan ranges. It is just an hour’s drive, may be less from Dehradun. Also known as honeymooner’s paradise, Mussoorie has plenty of tourist spots which have been developed solely for tourism. Being in Mussoorie could seem like hanging mid-way between heaven and earth. Cloud-clothed mountains, trees, the chill in the air and the bustling Mall together weave a magic over the senses. The abundance of poplar, eucalyptus, mango and plantain trees ensure that each morning is a cacophony of birds — resident and migratory — magpies, kingfisher, herons, magnificently whistling blue birds.

Gun Hill
On a clear day, enjoy a thrilling cable-car ride to Gun Hill, the second highest peak in Mussoorie, which offers a panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges. The ride is only 400m but makes for a truly memorable experience. There are viewing posts to enjoy some of the highest Himalayan ranges. At Gun Hill, there are stalls advertising for self-portraits in red-velvet Kumaoni costumes. Borrow some jewellery and pretend to be one from the foothills of the Himalayas. It is quite enjoyable.

Mussoorie Lake
Mussoorie Lake is a newly developed picnic spot situated on Mussoorie- Dehradun Road, at a mere distance of 6km from main Mussoorie. Commanding an enchanting view of nearby villages and of the hill station itself, it is a charming little picnic spot. It is a man-made lake with some pedal boats available on hire. It usually serves as a stopover for people travelling via  road  from  Dehradun  to  Mussoorie.  There  are  some  eateries  for tourists also. The lake was developed by the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority.

Lal Tibba
An invigorating 5-km walk from the Tourist Office will take you to Lal Tibba, the highest peak in Mussoorie and located in Landour, the oldest inhabited area in Old Mussoorie. You may even opt for a horse ride to the peak and enjoy the view of the snow-capped peaks. There is a big Japenese binocular placed by the Municipality in 1967 here so that one can view the various peaks of the Himalayas. It gives splendid views of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Banderpunch and other Himalyan ranges. If you are lucky enough, you may even get to see the imposing Nanda Devi peak. This place has an old-world charm to it.

Kempty Falls
At a distance of approximately 15km from Mussoorie, this is a fascinating waterfall. Despite temperatures of less than 15 degrees, Kempty Falls is always full of tourists splashing around in the pond. Adding to the fun is the fact that there are shops which offer shorts and towels on hire! You have to climb 50ft to reach the fall — the water gushes out of the surrounding mountains and splits into five beautiful falls.

Park Estate
The sprawling 173-acre estate in Hathipaon, near Mussoorie is the one-time residence of Sir George Everest, the surveyor general after whom the world’s highest peak was named. Given its rich historical background and picturesque setting, the estate holds potential as a tourist destination. The mansion rests on a vantage point that offers a breathtaking view of the Doon valley. The building itself, comprising the observatory, is in partial ruins but still makes for a must visit.

Ivy Cottage
An alluring option is a trek up to Ruskin Bond’s villa, who lives in the mountains of Mussoorie at an address called Ivy Cottage. Located in the cantonment area, this famous story teller’s abode is a small yet warm and cosy place.

Christ Church
Built in1837 by Captain Rennie Tailour of the Bengal Engineers, the Christ Church is a notable landmark of Mussoorie. Located above the library end of the Mall, it is within an easy walking distance and effortlessly accessible. One of the main attractive features of this Gothic-style church is its stained- glass windows.

Mall Road
There are malls mushrooming up in our cities. But the shopping experience at Mussoorie’s Mall Road is quite exhilarating. It’s amazing that one can find the latest products and brands in Mussoorie too. Park your vehicle before entering the Mall Market since four-wheelers are not allowed inside. The Mall Road provides a great view of the surrounding areas and is dotted with sit outs facing the valley, where you can relax and enjoy the breeze. The Mall constitutes an attractive feature of Mussoorie Hills and it would be worth your time to take a stroll here.
